Hattie B’s Chicken is famous in the South. The newest location in Birmingham has been open for a while and we finally took time to head down to the Lakeview District on 7th Avenue South in Birmingham to sample the goodness.
Choosing to eat an early dinner paid off. The 5 p.m. crowd was light. The family style seating indoor or outdoor was perfect for our family of five.
Here’s what to expect:
Walk in through the front door or the side porch. You’ll see a line near the giant chicken mural. Order to-go or dine-in in the same line.
Pay with cash or credit, grab a number and your drink cups. Dining attendants will deliver your food in baskets and paper plates.
Kids meals are reasonable $5.50 for one large chicken tender and a side + drink. I ordered an additional chicken tender for each of my kids for a $1.50 each.
Dining:
I ordered a three veggie plate. My husband got a two piece chicken plate. The size of the chicken breast is incredible. He ate one and one side, saving the second piece and second side as a to go meal.
They have the good crushed, chewable ice.
We skipped dessert.
Kids:
The kids loved the chicken and fries. However my youngest hates pickles and they put two pickles on top of the chicken tenders. It caused some friction but he worked through it. To avoid that if you have a pickle hater, just tell them no pickles.
Fries have seasoning on them but it’s not hot.
My only complaint:
I didn’t like the slaw. It was sweet which is wrong. But that’s my opinion. The medium heat level was delicious. We didn’t try anything hotter. We’ll go back and give it a go, one day.
