Sometimes climbing rock walls, foam columns and nets can be therapeutic. Sometimes it wears you out completely. If you’re lucky it will do both. Recently the kids hit the walls at High Point Climbing Fitness in Birmingham on U.S. 280. Here are my tips, ways to save and a review of this facility that’s worth checking out if you’re near the Inverness, Al area.

They offered a half-price admission and free gear rental – something we could not ignore.  This was a huge savings for our family of five. The kids were outfitted with harnesses and shoes.

The quick check-in was even faster since I had completed their online waiver. I suggest doing this, to avoid the touch screen stations. Go here to get started with that process.

Review:

The quality of gear and the courses were superb. Our kids found each of the walls in the Kids Zone to be not only challenging but fun. Be sure to read the instructions at the beginning stage of the wall. Some of them include games, challenges or tasks to make the climb more entertaining.  Lines formed around the foam columns however everyone moved quickly which kept the kids happy.

Pros: The facility was clean and there’s a rule, no climbing shoes in the bathroom which is nice. The workers were efficient, diplomatic and completely explained the facility uses and rules. They allow you to bring drinks and snacks but you must do that in designated areas.  This is an incredible benefit to parents who want to hang out all day.

Working while kids play: The area is contained enough for work at home parents to allow kids to play in the same area while you work.

Cons: No real cons – there were a few things I noticed that could have been better, perhaps lockers instead of cubby holes for moms who want to climb but don’t want to leave keys, purses or phones in the open, unattended.  Nothing major that couldn’t easily be adjusted by the climber.
